Chicano Student Programs Lending Library was started in 1996 by then student David Casillas. When it first began we had a few books (approximately 150) with donations from various professors on campus. Now our library has more than 300 volumes and it continues to grow. Topics of our books range from fiction/nonfiction, historical, cultural, political, biographical, to children's literature, anthologies, reference, and various journals. Our specialty are books on the Chicano experience, books written by Chicanos/Latinos. We recognize the need and the importance of having our stories and experience being told.
The intention of the library was to have a space where students could do research, have a book for a class they cannot afford or just get a little more information about who they are or where they come from. Since university libraries rarely have this information and rarely have this information within easy access. As Chicano Student Programs, we serve as a resource center for the student body here at UCR.
We are seeking donations of books (new or used), money or even ideas of how we can keep our Lending Library updated. If you have any ideas, or books you would like to donate please contact Chicano Student Programs at (951) 827-3821. LEER ES PODER!
